Canine Unit

K-9 Justice is currently the newest member of the Sitka Police Department and the newly formed Canine Unit. He is a German Shepherd imported from the Netherlands and is trained to work in both narcotics and patrol tactics. K-9 Justice was purchased with funding from within the community and the National Association of Chiefs of Police to address the concerning increases of illegal drug use and manufacturing within our community.

The Fairbanks Police Department generously donated a used 1993 Ford Crown Victoria to help establish the Canine Unit. The used vehicle will replace a higher mileage detective's vehicle. The donated vehicle was outfitted courtesy of the City of Fairbanks Public Works Department to transport Justice safely in the rear of the vehicle. A special thank you to Public Works Director Dave Jacoby, a former Sitkan who also maintained the vehicle while both the canine handler and canine received their training up in Fairbanks. Veterinary services are donated by Dr. Hunt who helps ensure that Justice is in good health and up to date on all his shots. Food for the canine is also donated with help from New Start Pets and their customers, Science Diet and community donations.

Detective Mark Hake and his K-9 Partner Justice attended the Alaska State Trooper Canine Academy in Fairbanks, where both received their certifications in narcotics detection and patrol tactics consisting of an 11-week training period completed in August. As of September, K-9 Justice has already indicated to illegal narcotics such as marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine within our community and charges are currently pending. The K-9 Unit also assists in tracking of suspects, building searches, warrant service as well as conducting public and educational demonstrations for civic organizations and schools.

K-9 Justice lives with Det. Hake and his family at their residence where playing ball is his favorite pastime during his time off.
